About Me

I am passionately dedicated to helping every student that I teach in any way that I can. I thrive on becoming part of the 'team' that supports them, not only in their Maths learning, but in building their wider aspirations and self belief. I have been privileged to tutor some amazing young people over the years and am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to help them grow and achieve.

2024 Update : I will be taking a 6 month break from tutoring after the summer GCSEs in 2025. I will then resume tutoring from January 2026. If you wish to enquire about tutoring for after that date please do get in touch as I will continue to respond to emails during my break.

My Experience

Qualified Maths Teacher - BA with QTS - Warwick University

September 2010 - July 2014

1:1 Maths, English and Science Teacher - Complementary Education

I worked part time in a specialised unit delivering 1:1 tuition to students on individual learning plans or those that had been excluded from mainstream school. The programmes of study were varied and involved liaising with schools and parents with the aim to help students progress with their education with us or helping support them with a phased return to school.

October 2014 - April 2021

Maths Teacher - Hospital and Outreach Education

As a Maths teacher at Hospital and Outreach education I was responsible for delivering a Maths curriculum to small groups of vulnerable young people who, for various different reasons struggled to access mainstream education. Many came to us having missed significant chunks in their education, with low self esteems and little aspirations for their future. I was part of an amazing team that though building meaningful, caring relationships with them helped them overcome their barriers to learning, build confidence and self belief and eventually progress to sitting actual GCSE exams or returning to school.

Ongoing with over 10 years experience

Private Tutor

I have privately tutored many students over the years. Some short term just as part of their GCSE exam preparations and others long term to support their Maths progress at School. I team up with them and their families and together we put in place a programme of study that helps motivate and build self confidence as well as improve their Maths ability.

May 2017 - present day

External GCSE Examiner for Edexcel exam board

As part of my professional development I became an external examiner for the Edexcel exam board. This involved specific training in London and then, every year before marking the actual GCSEs sat by students, rigorous online benchmarking to ensure consistency of mark allocation with all examiners assigned to a particular paper. It has proved to be exceptionally beneficial in enhancing my ability to help prepare students to sit the actual GCSE exams themselves and not just learn the content required for them.

What I Offer

I decided to leave the education system in 2020 and focus on offering Private tuition to students. This can be short term or long term but either can be extremely beneficial in building confidence and self belief, break down barriers to learning and significantly help them progress. My approach is always tailored to the circumstances of the individual student and after initial discussions follows a personalised and flexible programme of study that benefits them specifically.

One-on-One Private Lessons

The benefit of private lessons is that they can be totally focused on the individual student and adapted to meet their specific needs. They run alongside their main Maths lessons and curriculum taught at school and primarily look to fill in any gaps of knowledge and understanding from the content already taught.

Exam Preparation

It is essential students are taught how to approach sitting exams and not just learn and understand the Maths content required for them. They need to be shown how to apply their knowledge and structure their answers so they can successfully obtain full marks when answering the exam questions themselves.

Home Schooling

Some students for various different reasons are home schooled and I can put together a programme of Maths education and study devised to meet the requirements of the national curriculum.

"Mel has supported my daughter with her GCSE during a very difficult time. Since starting the sessions my daughter's confidence and capability have both greatly improved. Mel's enthusiasm for her work really shines through and nothing is too much trouble. I have no hesitation in recommending Mel to anyone who is looking for a tutor." (private 1:1 tuition 2021)

"Over the years I gradually gave up on maths accepting that it just wasn’t for me.

Then I met you, and you gradually brought me out of my shell and made me realise that it wasn’t the actual maths holding me back, it was who was teaching me it. You are an AMAZING teacher! You make maths enjoyable, and I always looked forward to your lessons! You’ve built a bond with your students and you remember what they’re more confident in and also what they’re least confident in (for me, algebra) which I love, I can’t thank you enough for what you have done for me" (GCSE student 2020)
